Friendships can’t always be chosen. We can spend a great amount of time with certain people, but merely become acquaintances. Some friendships are born out of the most spontaneous situations such as: through a class assignment, an embarrassing moment, a compliment or maybe just a simple question. That’s what it took to make one of Catherine’s greatest friendships, a question.
“Hey, did you do the homework?”
Catherine and Natalie have been friends since the fourth grade. Although, they had a group of friends; they were the closest ones to each other. As they kept moving from grade to grade, they were still great friends. Eventually, they both had to apply to high school. As they were looking through schools, there was one that caught both of their attention – Civic Leadership Academy. The school had only opened a year ago when they were applying; therefore, there were only a few amounts of students in the school. As so, they both applied and were accepted. Since they both didn’t know anyone in the school or who also had been accepted; they were full of nervousness and fright of what this school can be holding for them, on their first day of school.
During their sophomore year of high school, their friendship was put to the test. Rumors began to disperse in the air like chemical toxins. There was a particular girl – who had a reputation—told Natalie that the rumors had been spread from Catherine. Natalie didn’t believe this girl or the rumors, but as any other person, she did have her doubts. Rather than physically fighting or arguing, they decided to talk it out. The thought of throwing a long meaningful friendship away all due to one person’s words – wasn’t worth it.
Their last year of high school, senior year, was spent together by hanging out and going to all senior events such as: prom, senior trip, senior dinner, senior week, graduation, and so on. By this point of the profile, you might think that Catherine and Natalie are the type of friends who literally like the same thing—but no. They don’t completely share the same interests. Catherine can be described as a person who loves playing sports; watching Korean dramas; mostly listens to Korean pop; and afraid of almost everything around her – no joke. While Natalie is a girl who likes to plays sports, but after while gets tired of it; enjoys watching movies; has a variety taste in music; and is just afraid of vicious pigeons. Although, they both like to party, watch comedy and action movies, have the same taste in guys; in addition, they’re always there for each other whether its family problems or relationship problems. Theses differences don’t make much of a disparity in their friendships because their ability of getting along, understanding and enjoying different interests are what makes them continue being friends.
After having your best friend in your class since fourth grade till senior year of high school; going to college together would sound like an excellent idea. The college process is not fun and definitely not easy, and when trying to apply to the same school as your best friend – it can be even more difficult. They both didn’t have the same grades or choice of major in order to apply to the same schools. In the end, they both chose different schools and majors. Catherine is majoring psychology at CCNY, and Natalie is majoring speech pathology at LaGuardia CC. This doesn’t it’s the end of their friendship, but just another chapter.
Who would have known that through the question of, “hey, did you do the homework?” would have created this long and meaningful friendship of Catherine and Natalie. Although, Natalie didn’t quite give the response Catherine was looking for, “Yes, I did do it”. No check for doing homework, check for making the greatest friend ever.
